Elsie & Fleur

Just as you would give your home a big clean at the start of spring it is also worthwhile doing the same at the beginning of autumn, especially as you are likely to be spending the majority of the next few months indoors.

Any cleaning you didn’t get around to doing in spring should be done now such as washing all of your bedding, including duvets and pillows.

Give your laundry area a lift with a new peg bag or get your cleaning equipment organised with a handy apron complete with pouches for storing dusters and other tools.

Think about getting your carpets cleaned to get rid of the accumulation of dirt and debris brought in during the summer.

Give your windows a thorough clean inside and out and ensure your gutters are clear of anything that could cause a blockage.

If you have an open fireplace, it is important to make sure you get it cleaned and serviced by a professional as you don’t want soot and smoke to billow into the room the first time you use it again.

Swap cushions and curtains in lightweight summer fabrics, such as linen and cotton, for ones in more luxurious fabrics like velvet. Choose rich, autumnal colours and to make things extra cosy add a coordinating throw or blanket.

If you have room, create an area just inside the front door where everyone can leave their coats, shoes, scarves and hats.
