Stripes are a great way to freshen up a room.

They are extremely versatile as they can be incorporated into any style or size of room and they can also be used with other patterns. For example, florals, spotted designs and geometric patterns all work well with stripes. In order to create a unified look, stick to one colour palette.

When choosing colours avoid ones that clash and instead use shades that contrast or come from the same colour group.

Depending on how they are used, stripes also have an ability to hide a room’s flaws. For example, vertical stripes create the illusion of height, making walls appear taller than they really are. If you want to make a narrow room appear wider, then use horizontal stripes instead.

It is also important to think about the size of the stripes you use. Thin stripes can make a larger room appear cluttered, while wider stripes can lose their impact in a smaller space.

If you don’t want to go all out with stripes then incorporate a few smaller decorative elements such as a striped lampshade, cushions or artwork.
