Creating the perfect dinner table
When you’re entertaining at home it is essential to make sure you create the perfect atmosphere.
If you have guests coming for lunch then you’ll need to make sure you have enough suitable chairs and if you are tight on space around the table, benches or stools can be a great alternative, as they are more compact.
You can set the scene with beautiful lighting. White fairy lights can look good when they are hung up around the walls or windows. Candles also work really well and you could incorporate them into your centrepiece. Tea lights in coloured glass candle holders look very atmospheric.
You should consider switching off any overhead lights and use free standing lamps instead, but make sure there will be enough light for people to see what they are eating.
Selecting a centrepiece is a tricky job as it really needs to be a showstopper, but it shouldn’t take up too much space or obstruct talk across the table so try using vases or candle holders with narrow bases.
For an organic look, depending on the time of year use a combination of branches and other foliage from your garden or a florists. The fashion with summer flower arrangements currently is to use scented English roses. Alternatively, for something more modern you could fill a clear vase with pebbles or glass balls.
Don’t forget table cloths, napkins and the cutlery and crockery you are going to use. Are you colour coordinating or mixing and matching with a vintage theme in mind?
Finally, have some suitable music, something people can talk over and isn’t too obtrusive but also gives tone to the event, on in the background to further enhance the atmosphere.
